Firstly, thank you to everyone who has congratulated me on my new position with Vogue Italia, I really appreciate it! I’ve gotten a ton of comments, emails, and tweets asking about Akira, the store I featured in the video. Akira does not carry plus sizes, but as you know, I am the queen of making things work and I encourage you to do the same! Because I’ve gotten such an amazing response, the wonderful people at Akira are offering my readers a 20% discount if you shop online at shop.akirachicago.com and enter this code at checkout: GABI20. The code is valid through March 31st. (You can find items I wore in the Vogue video here, here and here.)
This Spring, I’m loving light-colored neutrals like cream, tan, taupe, beige, nude, and even light pink. I just about died when I spotted this taupe dress with black sequin/beaded shoulders at H&M. (Everything in that store this season is perfection!) Today, I paired the dress with my new studded Jeffrey Campbell boots from Akira (still available on the website). We all know how hard it is to find thigh-high boots that actually fit, so discovering these made my year!
I initially wanted to show you guys this outfit in a video post, but it was a huge FAIL. People always find it surprising when I say I’m super shy in person, but it’s true! I hate being on camera, so I always have a million and one outtakes. I never got a good take describing the outfit, but the actual footage shows the colors/details of my dress much better than the pictures, so I decided to just upload the outtakes anyway! Enjoy!
Girl when I find a thigh high boots, I will be excited too lol! But you always look cute and gorgeous!!
You look amazing! OMGGGGG
Gabi that video is down right adorable. You look incredible! And those boots are something from another planet… I LOVE them.
The colors that are popping for Spring this year are somewhat surprising, but really exciting for me. I feel like I can finally crack out all my old beige!
It’s more than exciting to see the places you are going.

Haha! You’re too cute! lol! I totally got that dress too! Love the shoulder embellishments
Thanks for the Akira code! Will definitely be checking it out!

Love that video. It is too cute. I love H&M because you can always find something awesome there. Those boots are so neat. You are very lucky to have found those. When did you get long hair? LOL! You so cute. Long hair don’t care.
Gabi, I really like your attitude and style and I hate to be a downer, but I’m not sure how I can “make it work” with clothing that is too small for me. I understand that some items might be vanity-sized and I might (that’s a big might) get lucky with some stretchy top, for example, but that’s not good enough.
I want to encourage you to discover and feature stores and retailers who cater to those us of who wear sizes 14-24. I’m surrounded constantly by things that aren’t in my size. I was disappointed to see a store featured by you with this same downfall.
Hey Denise,
I understand your concern, but to be honest, I find most things at straight size stores much more my style (not to mention they are usually cheaper). I order some things online from overseas places like Dorothy Perkins, Evans and Asos, but that’s about it. For the most part I stick to Forever21, H&M, and thrift stores. I consider this my personal style blog, and though I do hope to inspire others through my outfits, I am not going to go out of my way to shop at plus size stores if that’s not where I’d usually go.
Yesss H&M top/ thigh high Bootz combo I have the same top and I almost fell over when I saw it…Gabi so Fab
those boots are SO RIDICULOUS. i love them.
Great post, Gabi! But I wanted to chime in on Denise’s comment: As a blogger myself, I feel as though it’s not my responsibility to “feature stores and retailers who cater to those” over a size 14. All I want to do (and I’m sure you do as well) is highlight my fashions and show that no matter what my size is, I can find pieces in varying that fit me well and are true to my style. The whole point of you showcasing Akira was the fact that you can find cute and affordable clothing that isn’t exclusively made for plus-size gals. Anyhow, kudos to you, Gabi!
hEY hUNNies! Who knows where to get that dress? I need it!
you are too cute. miss you.
Really great post Gabi – thanks, that dress looks great and you are right about how well the video makes it work… (not to mention you look cute as a button in it).
Thanks girl. x.

You are too adorable! I love it! And that dress is sexy and comfy looking too! Love the straight hair:)
OMG you look gorgeous!!!!! I love the boots, though I personally don’t think I could rock them, you ARE rocking them!!!
Aw, you’re gorgeous, Gabi! I swear you make me wish I was 20something again just so I could rock the fab clothes you keep pointing out!
That outfit is great! You look fabulous!
The outfit is amazing! i love the sweater!
This is for Denise.
If you look at plus size retailers they make the same type of clothing. Too wide, over printed and sometimes down right boring. H&M sizing is sort of kooky, they make things that fits a size 18/20 body beautifully and it can be an L on the tag. I do not like to do segregated shopping, and yes I am calling it segregated. Just because you made a place for me does not mean I have to stay in the realm, I thought we had freedom here. So I am taking my fat ass into Urban Outfitters, H&M and wherever else. I am going to pick something up, put my gold card down and walk out that store with my bag in tow.
Gabi you look great.
“neutrals like cream, tan, taupe, beige, nude, and even light pink.”
Nude? Not to get overly political, but that word is alienating for a lot of people of color. “Nude” as a word encompasses a variety of skin tones, where as “nude” as clothing refers to “like Caucasian skin”.
Otherwise, awesome post! I never thought thigh-high boots could be so amazing and chic.
You are really amazing and you inspire me.

I tried on that sweater too! Unfortunetly the fit didnt suite me…
You look amazing in it however!
A manageable DIY me thinks.
The boots are really cool! I wish I could find something that fit my tights! lol
About Denise’s comment I don’t think she meant on your personal blog but on Vogue.
Personally I am annoyed that Vogue Curvy will only features straight size shops. It’s just my opinion though. It has nothing to do with you. Your video was fun and it’s a great opportunity for you and Sakina.

Great post and the out tales was a great insight to your personality!
I also agree with blog to be alive.. whats the point in being vouge curvy if your not going to showcase curvy shops ? It seems that yet again a line has been drawn and if your over this line tough luck!…no reflection on you thou i love your blog and its urs so you do what ya like!
Love the colors! Such a cute outfit. Also, that video is hilarious.
1 congratulations my dear
2 i also love love love h+m this season and will have to blog why asap
3 you look super cute here
4 i do miss the curls though, gabi!
xxxxx
You: Unbelievably darling.
Your blog: Exquisite.
Overall: A masterpiece!
I’m following.
I saw this dress in H&M yesterday and had to tear myself away. I love it! You’re rocking those thigh highs – gorgeous.
Superb outfit, Gabi! Great hair! Killin’ it! And those boots are just clouds-parting-away-to-show-sun-while-the-angels-are-singing. lol. I think I just might have to venture into a H&M one of these days. Hardly go into that store but seeing that dress has changed my mind! Hopefully, it’s still there. *crosses fingers*
Hi Gabi! You are sooooo adorable and I am seriously loving this whole look and cute video! You made it happen Girly!
Yessss I tried that same dress on at H&M and loved it but wasn’t really me. It looks much better on you, though!!
I just wanted to say that this is my first time checking out this blog, and I’m more than pleasantly surprised…maybe ASTOUNDED and AMAZED would be more fitting haha…u showcase styles similar to my own and I have to agree that although I’ve been curvy all of my life, fluctuating between a 14 and a 20 times, Ive never found the styles I wanted at plus size stores, so much like you i split my shopping between stores like h&m, forever 21, zara, and american eagle, and online shops like asos (which i <3 to death), and alloy…but i just wanted to commend you on this awesome blog and you give me hope for more fashion forward girls like us to strut their stuff as confidently as the rest of the girls out there…Keep up the great work, and Im so excited about Vogue Curvy which I just found out about on my friend’s blog LoveBrownSugar.blogspot.com
Love the dress! And you look lovely, as usual
Thanks, Blog To Be Alive and Matron Jo. You got it: straight size stores featured on a “curvy” website seem unhelpful at best and annoying at worst. I don’t find Gabi or her personal blog annoying at all; she’s absolutely charming! But this was on a different website with an altogether different aim, I think.
This is for Crystal: my fat ass does not fit in clothes at the stores you listed, so even if I hauled it there, that’s no help! I’m not sure they would be your style (and I think part of the problem here is that I am quite a bit older than Gabi) but Igigi and Kiyonna both make beautiful things exclusively in plus sizes.
That shirt looks PERFECT on you! I had to go and try it on in H&M store.. Too bad that it didn’t suit me, even after trying on two different aizes. However, I found a nice black sequin shirt, lovely!
The video is extremely cute as well!
*sizes
Gabi!
I am a lurker but those boots have brought me out of hiding! Would it be too much trouble to give your fine readers the measurements of the widest part of that boot. I am about your size and while I can find clothes in both plus and straight stores – boots are a whole diff thing. In addition to being a thicke girl, I am a former volleyball player whose calves never really died.
Seeing them on you, I think these may work for me, but would love to have the circumference before ordering. I totally understand if it is too much trouble. Thanks!
Best, Jess
You look lovely in the cream sweater and you’re making thigh high boots look sweet somehow. Congrats on Vogue Italia! Amazing!
Gabi, you are supercute.
I frequented Vogue’s site the past week. It’s not what we all want it to be, but, I’m hoping it will get better with time. Gabi and Sakina were selected for a reason. They both think outside of the box when it comes to curvy fashion. I’m assuming they are expected to continue to be themselves on that site as they are on their personal blogs. Maybe in future Vogue videos, Gabi, you can stress your mantra of “making it work”.
I need those boots in my life!
Well goddamn; a spectacled Alicia Keys! Just what I always wanted.
Hi Gabi, I will start by saying thanks for your work, you helped me a lot in finding cool clothes on the web! That is great!!!!!
But I have a critism here, you are super cute but your video looks like a 12 years old’s video, if you want to make it seriously just do it well, we don’t see your outfit at all, you stop speaking when people pass by…what? Just choose a better place to do that kind of thing. And I really don’t like the boots, they don’t match the outfit…sorry everybody has different tastes. Just saying. But keep it up with the good work! You are very helpful to a lot of women! Including me!
Oh my gosh, I loove your top/ sweater/ dress!!!!

Gabi you are TOO adorable:-)! This outfit is HOT, HOT, HOT!!
I love the top! It looks so gorgeous!

Gosh Gabi – I just reread a bunch of this stuff and I wanted to say, well done on your thick skin girl. I think people expressing opinions is fine, but being rude is something else.
So I have to say, Severine – Gabi mentioned it was an outtakes video. I have worked in film/television editorial for ten years and that is exactly what an outtakes video looks like.
Meanwhile, great job on everything Gabi. Make sure you take time to breathe. Vogue is looking great, Evans is looking great and this blog, well you have tweeted lately about neglecting it a little – it will be here, and so will your readers – for the long haul. x.
Ah! I have that same dress but in green. It’s lovely. But the shoulders can be so annoying! Attaching themselves to things heh.
