Last week’s release of French Glamour’s blogger feature sparked a buzz questioning why the U.S. is so slow to embrace plus size women in fashion. While the press surrounding fatshion has undoubtedly increased in the past few months, most of it has seemingly come from overseas. Most recently, the June issue of French Marie Claire features plus size models Hayley Morley and Laura Catterall in this summer’s hottest swimwear and lingerie. They look simply gorgeous, of course, but I must admit that I’m crossing my fingers that more of these editorials show up in American mags. What do you guys think?

Gabi ~ I totally agree, The US needs more fashion editorials like this in order to get the push toward acceptance. Also it would help push stores to carry more plus size clothing, and then in turn push down the prices because there will be more competition!!

You should be glad that you don’t live in Norway. If your a big girl her, its almost impossible to find nice clothes. Almost everything in the “big girls” department (if the store even has one) looks like a big bag that no one under 40 should have to wear.
It’s getting better, a little bit at a time, but it’s not good at all.
I think this is the second time I have ever seen a reflection of myself in a fashion magazine (even other plus size or ‘all shapes’ don’t tend have ladies who look like me) what struck me is that these women have breasts that are sitting naturally not propped up or stuffed into pushup bras, those breasts actually look like my breasts.
I agree with Flavia Durante I don’t like the fact that the plus sized models are mostly nude in a lot of the magazine features.

Hi Gabi ! I’m a french girl and I would like to add my 2 cents.
Most of the clothes shown here are from Princesse Tam Tam. The biggest size in this brand seems to be 42 (= 10 US size). Sad but true, that’s the french conception of plus size fashion…

The UK’s Times newspaper just ran a feature on the recent surge in interest about plus-size models, too. I think Ashley Graham was one of the models on the cover? Anyway, these pages are beautiful. I hope there are more editorials like this, though I kind of wish writers would give the “real women” (“vraies femmes”) stuff a rest; it’s divisive and unnecessary. All women are real women.

I dont kno why but they look kind of 90ties like…the style of the pictures and the colors. I really like them, it is a great editorial, seems like france is really going for plus sized models… Its not only the us which are kind of behind this, Germany isn’t any better.. >___>
Interesting what counts as plus size… someone commented that the clothes featured here are from a store that only goes up to size 10 US. A lot of women in the US would probably still need to diet to get anywhere near where these gorgeous models are. (The last picture makes me want to go to the gym…she looks outrageously sexy.)
Recently looking through the new much-heralded Italian Vogue “Curvy” website I saw that both liv tyler and kelly osborne are featured celebrities in the “Curvy Icons” section. Liv looks like she might be as much as a 6 US, and Kelly O. looks absolutely tiny these days with visible breastbone and very sharp collar bones in several casual photos (that is, she isn’t even doing the inverted shoulders pop-out-the-collar-bones pose we see in fashion fags so much these days). I was like, “really?”
It amazes me that America is the fattest country on Earth but yet we only want stick thin figures on our magazines, televisions, and catwalks. I really don’t understand that. I love your site Gabi, and I like that you put these images of models and of yourself (and fellow bloggers) on your site.
amazing that these models are featured as “plus” size. They look slim, of course not the usual skeletons magazines normally show. But it is of course refreshing to see women with a bit more flesh. They look beautiful
I find the brunette model to be stunning. Just stunning.
I am happy that the editorial is popular. But it is one out of a billion editorials featuring waif-like models.
America will be slow to embrace anything that goes against the standard norm. These “plus-size” models, who in all actuality represent the average woman..will be slow to integrate into the world of American fashion. We have quite a ways to go…
I love this blogg it totally inspires me to except myself and seeing that some mags weather here in the U.S. or overseas are acknowledging us curving women ….. i think that you should def continue posting both ur own outfits and the editorals … that combo is unique

i think its great to have representations/images of women who are fit and healthy (like the ones above), however, i think it is extremely dangerous to label these women as fat or plus sized. this type of mass media messaging is perpetuating the sexist, oppressive standards of the stick thin models as the norm. if these models above are considered “fat” and “fat” as we all know, is not considered to be anything a young girl should aspire toward, contributes to the epidemic of eating disorders. although this article is french, it definitely still applies to women worldwide that are sold these images. see below the alarming US statistics:
*1 in 5 women struggle with an eating disorder or disordered eating. (National Institute of Mental Health)
*Eating Disorders affect up to 24 million Americans and 70 million individuals worldwide. (http://www.renfrew.org.)
*90 % of those who have eating disorders are women between the ages of 12 and 25. (SAMHSA)
*81% of 10 year olds are afraid of being fat. 51% of 9 and 10 year old girls feel better about themselves if they are on a diet. (Journal of the American Dietetic Association.)
*The average woman is 5”4’ and weighs 140 pounds. The average model is 5”11’ and weighs 117 pounds. Most fashion models are thinner than 98% of American women. (National Eating Disorders Association/Next Door Neighbors)

This spread brings back memories of a magazine I was obsessed with in high school–I think it was called Mode or Moda, and it was geared towards plus women and featured only size 12+ women in the photos. I’ve never been what you would consider plus-size, but I got so much inspiration from the images in that magazine.
Only a few issues were released before the mag was pulled, but man I loved the 2-3 issues I had to complete rags. I’d kill to see more stuff like this.

They have got to be kidding. These women are plus size? These women are fat? The world has really turned on its head. Just a few years ago, they would be considered normal and healthy. It’s so sad. These women are beautiful.. and normal.
If a size 10 is plus size in France … well that makes sense, everybody walks. Thanks for posting this, I couldn’t get away with it!
These women are naked for a couple of reasons:
*to show confidence in ones own skin
*to show that those curves are sexy
*because artistic nudes are popular
