Peplum dresses and skirts are one my favorite trends of Spring 09. I’ve loved them for a while, but I have yet to see one on a fat girl. I know, I know, adding ruffles to one’s midsection probably isn’t considered flattering, but I really want to know what this shape looks like on a plus size body. In fact, I’ve wanted to know so badly, I recently attempted to squeeze into an amazing [size 14] floral peplum dress at Salvation Army. Let’s just say that ended in ripped seams and shattered dreams.
I first noticed the dresses appearing on UK online stores a few months ago, and I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that Torrid got on board with the trend. Too bad, as usual, they’re not exactly fashion forward:
They aren’t terrible by any means, it’s just that the ones offered by asos, etc. are so much cuter. Still though, I am hoping the fact that Torrid has a few means that more are on the way. (Which reminds me, Faith21 has been adding new items to their online store everyday. Still not impressed.)
I have this great floral bodycon dress (reminiscent of Kelly Kapowski) that I can’t wait to break out this Spring. I’ve already tried to create my own “peplum” version of it by adding a short ruffled skirt over top; I’ll debut the results here soon. In the mean time, if any of you have tried this trend, be sure to comment! I’m excited to see this look on other fab fatties.
I agree with you UK designer and retailer are doing a way better job with plus size fashion. May have to take a trip across the pond for a shopping spree.
It’s so true! asos and dorothy perkins are great, but it’s unfortunate that they dont sell plus sizes (above UK22, which i believe is equivalent to a US 18?)
anyway, evans and new look also have way better options than US retailers. i think the US has more plus size stores and cheaper products, but the quality/designs are totally subpar compared to the UK.
I actually really like the Torrid herringbone peplum dress… but not enough to pay $78 for one. Pair it with a cropped jacket (maybe hitting right above the ruffles), and it’s a really cute work outfit.

it’s really cute! although my hips are quite big already, i don’t really care. it’s all in the confidence you have to carry it off. I think it’s adorable 😀

I love peplum dresses. People don’t make plus size peplum dresses that much.
The top ones are adorable. I’m a size 10, and I’ve also been a little scared of this trend, but the more I think about it, I think it could be quite flattering because it makes the waist look smaller?

This style reminds me of the tiered ruffled (usually stretch jersey) miniskirts that were super-trendy in 2003/4. It’s a cute 80s look that I wanted to try, but I never really saw it transfer to plus sizes.
I’m a UK 22 (US 18?) and I LOVE peplums – they’re flattering because they draw attention to my waist and cover the lower part of my stomach, and I love the silhouette they create. In fact I often end up creating a peplum ‘effect’ with lots of my clothes by belting my longer tops and shirts over pencil skirts.
I hope to be a rich old lady someday. No matter your size, you have to work to find something you like.
